FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR AMONG STUDENTS AND ITS EFFECT ON THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ISIALA MBANO L.G.A. OF IMO STATE
ABSTRACT

The project work was carried out to identify the factor responsible for aggressive behaviour among secondary school student and it effect in their academic performance. Primary data were used for the study and source through structure questionnaire. And out which 140 were return, 200 questionnaire was administered with the assistance of leaders in the schools. At the end the 140 questionnaire was collected from the respondents. In the data analysis, mean score and standard deviation was use to answer the question using independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis revealed the following, the family background, regular conflict, at home, peer group influence, poor self concept, drug addiction and mass media are some factors responsible for aggressive behaviour among secondary school student be role model, have good relationship with their children,  know the kind of friends their children keep, be careful with the kind of films and book their children are exposed to.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
    In recent times, it has been observed that student in Nigeria secondary schools environment commit various forms deviant behavior or aggression. Nwankwo (2008) noted that a close look at magazines and mass media shows that incidence of past and present rioting in secondary schools are caused by aggressive behavior of students. In most cases, aggression becomes a trigger that seems to ignite other form of deviant behavior in school.
    Aggressive behavior among secondary school student is also observed in tertiary institution (Nwaenyi and Efbezor, 2001, Ogidefa, 2008 and Robind Cited in McKinney 2006). To the authors, aggressive behaviours are noticed more in tertiary institution. Furthermore, they maintained that socio-economic status, gender and pee influence among others help to aggravate aggressive behaviours in Nigeria secondary school. To Onyejiak (2002) and Nwankwo (2008). These aggressive behaviours are rampant and it prevents the smooth running of the school activities.
    In the light of the above, it is worthy to state that one should not misconstrue aggressive for deviant behaviours, as the former only constitute the latter and not vice-versa. Aggressive behaviours in secondary school student also been observed to be an influential factor in the academic performance of secondary school students. Black (2000) and Akinada (1989) righty observed that students with aggressive behaviours are ranked low in academic performance at schools when compared to students without such behaviours.
    In Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, the extent to which aggressive behaviours term to hinder the progress of academic achievement of students schools is alarming. Thus, it has been a source of concern to Government and the entire public in the Area. Consequent upon the above, the research therefore investigated the factor responsible overaggressive behaviours among secondary school student in Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo state.
1.2    Statement of the Problem  
    In recent time, aggressive behaviour had attracted attention of stake- h0older among secondary school students. These behaviours had manifested in the form of destruction of schools properties, theft, beating up innocent students and teachers wickedness, insult, assaults, cultism, rape murder, to mention but a few. Based on the above, it appears that these aggressive behavioural problems of secondary school student have eaten deep into the marrows of the students in secondary schools.
    Consequently, influencing the innocent students, and cripple the educational system. Furthermore, these behavioural attitude have also been observed to lower standards among youths in most clans within the local government to the extent that the acceptable behavioural patterns that constitute the norms of people is seemingly being  eroded as it continues to threaten the collective existence of the people specifically the  student in the area. The problem of the study is what are factors responsible for aggressive behaviour among secondary school student in Isiala Mbano Imo state.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
    The purpose of the study is to investigate the factors responsible for aggressive behaviours among senior secondary school students in Isiala Mbano Local government area of Imo state.  In specific terms the intends;
1.    To investigate the factors responsible for aggressive behavior among male and female in secondary school students.
2.    To investigate the factors responsible for aggressive behavior among students from broken and intact homes.
3.    To investigate the factors responsible for aggressive behaviours among students from educated and non-educated families.
1.4    Research Question
    The following research question will guide the study.
1.    What are the factors responsible for aggressive behaviours among secondary school students in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State?
2.    What are the factors responsible for aggressive behaviour based on student gender in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State?
3.    What are the factors responsible for aggressive behaviour based on students’ family type in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State?
4.    What are the factors responsible for aggressive behaviour based on parental education in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State?
1.5    Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses testable at 0.05 le4vel of significance difference guided the study.
1.    There is no significant difference in the factors responsible for aggressive behaviours among male and female secondary school student.
2.    There is no significant difference in the factors responsible for aggressive behavior among students from broken and intact homes.
3.    There is no significant in the factors responsible for aggressive behaviors among students from educated and uneducated families
1.6    Significance of the Study
        The study is very significant in that when completed the findings accruing from it will benefit the following category of individuals. The study created awareness, among students in secondary school; specially those who have not been involved with acts of aggressive behaviours in secondary school, the causes, effects and punitive measures that can taken against such defaulters.
        Teachers and other school administrators will also benefit from the finding of the study as the findings will bring to light those factors that are responsible for aggressive behaviours among secondary school student thereby enabling them to put in place, dependable and workable strategies to tackle the problem of aggressive behaviours in the secondary schools environment.
    The finding of the study will beneficial to other researcher in the field who wish to carry out researches in similar areas.
1.7    Scope of the Study
        This study focused on factors responsible for aggressive behaviours among secondary school students in Isiala Mbano government area of Imo state.
        Influence of gender, socio-economic background, and school local was also investigated. Only public secondary school students in public school in the area were studied.


1.8    Definition of terms
    The following terms have been operationally defined:
    Aggressive:  Angry and behaving in a threatening way, ready to attack.
    Behaviour: the way somebody behaves, especially towards other people; good or bad behaviour, social/sexual/criminal behaviour.
